GVWR=Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. This is the amount of weight the vehicle can safely support on its chassis. In other words, it's how much it can carry, including itself.
GaiaGoddess wrote:That isn't what you said. In your first quote above, you said you're trying to find trailer that weighs less than your Escape's GVWR. You reiterated that in your second quote, but that's not how it works. Don't confuse pulling with carrying. Both are important. That's exactly what I said, only in different words! People have told me before (not in this forum) to just look at the GVWR and make sure the trailer I choose weighs less than that.
GaiaGoddess wrote:It doesn't matter if 100 people told you that, it's still not how it works.Maybe i've been misled by other people too, clearly there are many different opinions on how to do this correctly.
wnjj wrote:Thanks, wnjj. You're right, this isn't opinion, it's the way it works. Opinion comes into play when people say "you can tow that" without having any factual basis. Rather than asking if we can (after all, most vehicles can tow most things), we ought to be asking if we should.
GVWR has nothing to do with the weight of the trailer. This isn't just a "different opinion". This is the way the manufacturers specify it.
GaiaGoddess wrote:If you want to create a lifestyle centered around RVing, I suggest that saying "there are just too many things to remember" is the wrong way to approach it. There really isn't that much to remember. A great many people understand these basic towing concepts. You can, too. Be smart. Learn. Absorb. Make informed decisions. And in a few years, you'll be the one helping others understand. Those other numbers get confusing though, there's too many of them to remember.
As far as how the numbers work, I think the descriptions above are pretty clear, so I won't reiterate. The picture provides an accurate visual as well. If you have any specific questions, though, I'll be happy to do my best to answer them.
