Not sure if you knew, but my Escape is a V6. I understand something bigger (same size engine though) would be better, but I just got this car a year ago and I love it more than words can say and it's been more reliable than any other vehicle I've ever had and I've owned probably 20 vehicles in my life. I am not saying I'll NEVER upgrade, but for now, since I just bought it and love it so much, I want to get a few good years out of it. I know i'll eventually have to get something else years down the road, and that will be a good time to upgrade my trailer too since I will have already gotten comfortable and more experienced with towing.
20 vehicles? OK then, I completely understand. I've owned a lot of cars and when you find one you like, you gotta make it work.
If you haven't figured it out already, you have entered a quagmire of mangled facts struggling to find absolute truth.
It would be easier to find out the best way to seperate conjoined twins than to get a clear answer on the questions you have posed.
First, is figureing out who the real experts are. RV salesman and car salesman are the last people you want to get advice from. Sad but true.
Here on this forum we have a lot of really smart guys but the expertise tends to be about trucks. Because trucks are designed around their payload it's much easier to get clear answers.
If i were you I would go back to the dealer, skip over the sales guys and talk to someone in the service department. Find the older guy with a clue and tell him your dilemma.
The specific question is, what components are in the factory towing package and what would it take to retrofit your car.
We have bombarded you with towing geek stuff so some of what he says should line up with what's been said here.
Also, go back to the Tin Can Tourist FB page. There are a lot more people in the Glamper crowd towing little trailers with little cars.
