Is my TC becoming a White Elephant...?

Not sure if I should sell it or keep it.

It is fully paid for as is the truck. But, I have only used it once last year when I went hunting and it looks as if that will be the only time I use it this year as well. I am able to store it on my own land without restrictions so storage is not an issue. I might have used it twice in the previous year.

It is in great shape- I bought it in brand new, never used condition as a bank repo in the spring of 2010. I got it for a great price and because of this bargain is a main reason why I tend to want to keep it. I could not replace it for the low price paid.

My priorities have changes since purchasing a house some 3 years ago. It is a fixer-upper and because of this, the TC stays off the truck so as to make Home Depot runs. Heck- I can camp better than most folks on my deck looking up at the shooting stars with the sounds of the river behind my house... and can often wake up to see bear and moose in my yard all from the safety of the deck! Why head out in the woods when I live within it.

The TC sure is luxuriously handy when I do use it for hunting, but camping is no longer a priority. If I paid closer to what I should have paid for it I 'prolly would have already sold it (perhaps because of some warped reasoning of trying to recoup any money paid for it.)

I like TC's. This one is my 4th one. I keep it is good shape and maintained and have made some significant improvements to it. The only time I do not like having it is when I need to sweep snow off if it.. which is several dozens of time in winter.

I would probably miss it right away should I sell it...
  • It's only a white elephant if you remove all the stripes and graphics.
  • I would sell it a 2008 northstar will still bring in good resale. Then in a couple years you can always pick up a 2 or 3 year old TC.
  • Sell it to someone who will get use from it. Buy another someday if your needs change. TC' s do not get better as they age. It will never be worth more than it is now. The real dilemma is understanding why you don't want to explore anymore!
  • It's paid for. You have no problem storing it. However..you mentioned sweeping the snow off it. If you're leaving it outside all bare naked, put some form of hard cover over it.

    That being said...

I absolutely would not give it up. You're not going to be remodeling your house forever. You'll kick yourself when you're done for selling it.
  • I guess "white elephant" I mean not being useful... I most certainly could find a home for it for perhaps even more than I paid for it.
  • I guess it depends on your definition of white elephant.
