One other thing that always catches my eye in these threads is the cost of a diesel when new. The 7K is MSRP and what you really pay is closer to 5500 if you negotiate a good price. Just thought that's work a mention for people crunching numbers.
Most Ram dealers in our area will come down about $9000 on a new 2014 Cummins off factory MSRP. That about makes it even with the 6.4 unless the consumer can get as good a deal on that new truck. I have not seen the 6.4 trucks discounted much more than $4-5000 off MSRP. That tends to almost even out some of the extra diesel engine cost. The new Cummins using DEF actually get a little better fuel mileage over those previous models that did fuel based regen. And DEF costs less than a half penny a mile depending on where you purchase DEF and how hard you are driving the truck.
One thing that is an absolutely significant difference between the two trucks is the power. The Cummins puts out almost twice the torque of the 6.4 as long as the automatic transmission is behind it. (The manual transmission is derated.) The 6.4 puts out 429 foot pounds of torque, the Cummins in excess of 800 and with the Aisan medium duty auto transmission 850 foot pounds. That is a huge consideration when towing especially in the mountains or towing heavy like many medium to larger toyhaulers that can weigh 16-18,000 pounds or more.
From a few of the OP's comments on this thread it appears that he is going for the 6.4. There is no need to rationalize it as just wanting one is plenty good for all of us on this forum. Dodge had/has a winner with the Cummins since 1989 and by all early accounts has another winner with the 6.4. I doubt the OP could lose with either one.
