Very true, I was sorry as could be that I bought my 6.7 Cummins, got rid of it and picked up a Hemi powered 2500. To be fair it was prior def so maybe they are running a little more reliably with their emissions garbage.
DEF is introduced downstream of the engine into the exhaust. It is clean, relatively inexpensive on a per mile basis, and provides a mile or two per gallon better mileage for the diesel. It is not the regen process that you most likely owned in your truck. DEF is also used by all the newer 18 wheeler tractors and it appears to be reliable.
