I went from a stock 06 Dmax into my 6.4 Hemi and of course there are differences in where the power is but the end result is actually pretty close. I'm hard pressed to say one is better or stronger than the other. The 50 extra HP in the Hemi goes pretty far in canceling out the Dmax's torque advantage. My TT is about 8500# loaded.
After driving both and reading on here extensively I'd say around 10,000# one should start considering a diesel. Not that you can't tow less with a diesel or more with the Hemi. That's just where my head is at. There are lots of other factors to consider as well such as how often and how far you tow and what you do with the truck on a daily basis.
