Smart to avoid the extra $9,000 for a diesel you do not need. For under 12,000 lbs. the V-8 and the 4.10 gears are more than enough. I have a diesel and like its performance but I have no illusions that it was not a luxury purchase for my needs.
We often have a tendency to overkill in the USA. People driving Hummers to pick up groceries and take their kids to soccer games and people driving diesel pickups to tow a 8,000 lb. trailer down the highway. There is something juvenile about it and that is OK so long as we do not pretend that this is based on logic and not on emotion and our egos.
Check what your options are for replacing the stock fuel tank with a larger one for the cab and box type of the truck you plan to buy. It is nice to have 60 gallons instead of 26 gallons of fuel capacity when towing and the MPG is reduced along with the driving range per tank of fuel by 25% or more.
