Is Re-gearing worth it?
Hello all. My name is James. My wife and I just purchased a 2012 Coleman 274BH and we absolutely love it. It comes in at 4580 dry.
Our TV is a very low mileage mint condition 2007 F150 with the 4.6, 3.55 gears and a tow rating of 6300. Its actually a very nice truck; however, its underpowered when pulling. As a matter of fact, it wouldnt even go into overdrive (i know to tow with OD off). She does get the job done safely, and we are within its limits.
I'm considering having a gear ratio change from 3.55 to 4.56 for towing. That would put me at roughly 2300 rpm in OD while cruising at 65, which is no problem for my daily commute. With OD off, we would be at roughly 3200 rpm at 65. I know this topic has been discussed and I'd like some input. Is it safe to run the 4.6 at 3200 rpm for long distances? Is it worth the investment? Thanks.
