Check the ratings in the Ford and GM towing guides and find as I did that the 3.73 provides 25% greater towing capacity and going to 4.10 provides another 25% and these are available as options from the factory. I have always had 4.10 or lower gears and even with 4-speed automatic transmissions it did not hurt fuel economy.
I would expect the cost of a gear swap with 4WD to be around $1000. Changing out a set of truck tires will cost as much or more and not provide anywhere near the gain. The change in gearing with your larger tires is probably around 5% or less.
The manufacturers have to meet the federally mandated fleet fuel economy numbers or CAFE and they know that trucks and SUV's kill their average so they put in higher than necessary or advisable gears to squeeze out an additional 1-1.5 MPG highway during the EPA testing.
Anyone buying a vehicle to be used for towing would be advised to take 15 minutes and download and review the manufacturer's towing guide before they go shopping and make a purchase.
