Just more towing power. She really struggles to get up to speed due to the lack of power. It would also be nice when not towing. I'd like the truck to last and it seems the gearing will help remove strain from the Trans and engine... but then again the higher rpm for long periods of time may not be great on it. either.
The 07 4.6 makes peak hp at 4750 rpm and peak torque at 4000 rpm.
With the 3.55 at 4000 rpm your speed is approximately 65 mph in second gear and 36 mph in first.
With a 4.56 at 4000 rpm your speed is approximately 51 mph in second gear and 28 mph in first.
A 4.56 would be good to run on a 1/4 mile drag strip. But for normal driving and towing at speeds less than 65 mph and greater than 45 mph I doubt you will find much of an advantage with the 4.56.
Cruising at 75 without a trailer you will have a big hit on fuel economy with a 4.56.
To get what you want you need more horsepower not more gearing.
Winner, winner chicken dinner.
I have said it on here a million times. Gearing does not make horsepower.
WOW! please don`t offer advice on things you are not completely knowledgeable on.
It is proven that gearing makes a huge difference in towing! why do manuf. offer different gearing with different tow ratings? I can tell you firsthand on how much better it is. I gained about .8mpg towing going from a 3.73 to a 4.30. yes I did lose about the same unloaded highway, but I don`t drive mine unloaded very often and were talking about towing not everyday driving. the lower gearing makes better use of the available power when towing!
Ok; how me one dyno chart that shows gearing adds horsepower and I will concede. In fact it's quite the opposite. Shorter gearing takes away from HP.
The only thing gearing does is add torque and as stated above (and true) will keep it in the power band a bit better. The thing with that is most towing engines have a pretty broad power band anyway so unless you want every last ounce of energy out of your engine to keep it just exactly in the power band it not going to do that much. The 6 speed trans pretty much made rear end gear changes obsolete.
People change gears and it "feels" much better to the seat of the pants. Feeling and actual numbers are two completely different things.
Your turn Dodge Guy. Show me the chart.
Never said gearing makes more power, it makes the available power more usable (leverage).
