My wife's uncle worked as a technician for a guy who took out a patent for a catalytic converter. This was back in the late '50's early 60's.
The company's main work was coming up with a way for hospitals in Phila. to incinerate body parts and also unclaimed bodies of indigents. The smell of burning human remains was apparently stinking up the neighborhoods.
His boss eventually sold it to GM.
