Is the Ram 1500 finally catching up with the competition?

This pickuptrucks.com article shows a Megacab mule. The thing that caught my eye was the 6 lug wheels. Maybe they're finally trying to compete in the payload category.

From reading recent reviews and watching repair videos, I would NOT buy a RAM or any other FCA product. To many issues, many electrical, after 3-5 years of ownership.

Well that sounds like some good real world experience...... Thanks for sharing old wiz!
I do have a rear speaker out and an intermittent low bug juice light in my 10 year old Ram.
Kinda been hoping for better reasons than that though to trade up to a new one!

Guess it's a good thing they don't make electric cars. We used to joke about Harley building airplanes in the same manor. Funny thing was when we were out on our Japanese bikes on a long road trip we saw a ton of Harleys out traveling. I guess it was just a misperception.
  • No different then Ford or GM in the electrical repair area. I have replaced more power window motors in GM's than any Ford or FCA vehicle.
Than there is the high end Ford radio issues, much better the last two years but before that it cost them plenty.

They all are having some electrical issues, it is the nature of the beast. The higher end vehicles are so heavily loaded up with electronic toys now a days that problems are becoming common place anymore.

  • After actually owning a 2004 1/2 ton, a 2008 1 ton and a 2012 1 ton I can honestly say my next truck will be another RAM....

as a caveat I do also own several Ford SUV's

  • I'm thinking the 6 lug wheels on that mule was that they decided to use the 6 lug in place of the 8 lug because the weight/capacity of the truck didn't justify having the HD axles so the 6 lug is considered an in between setup.
    Just thinking out loud.
  • No the 1500 Mega had 8 lugs. From what I know they just ran a lighter spring pack than the 2500.

What will the payload be on this? 700lbs? Lol

Nope, the only thing Dodge had that is/was 6 lug was the Dakota pickup and some suvs. Never seen a 6 lug 1500 in the Ram family unless that's something new for 16-17 model yrs.
  • Maybe an HD package like Fords F150? Throw in the 6.4 Hemi with 8spd and they'd have something serious for the 1/2 ton crowd.
