Is there a good performance muffler that's quiet?

I currently have a single 2-chambered Flowmaster (3" in/out) dumped under the bed right in front of the axle on my 04' Dodge Ram 1500 Hemi quad cab. For driving around town, and even on the highway it sounds awesome......nice deep idle, pretty quiet when cruising on the highway, and really screams when you mash the pedal. I tow a 25ft ski boat with my truck, and short trips to the lake (1 hour) don't really bother me too much, but the exhaust can get a little loud at times when you starting getting into the gas going up hills.

Now that we picked up a small 19ft camper trailer, and I've been going on some longer road trips with the family......and after a few hours, the exhaust note just gets annoying. It's not bad when you are on flat ground, but going up hills when the motor is spinning higher rpms just gets annoying.....I'm tired of hearing it (so are the wife and kid).

I'm going to cut the Flowmaster off and replace it with something else. I don't want to lose any power, but I do want to lose the noise and interior resonance. What should I try? Magnaflow? Borla? I want something that's quiet.....something that won't get annoying after pulling a trailer for 6+ hours.

  • I had the exact same problem WITH the complete exhaust exiting at the bumper. I liked the noise when not towing, but when hooked up to my trailer the drone became really annoying.

I ended up putting my stock muffler back on until i found a better fit/sound. My research also found that the 70 series is supposed to be good for towing, I just havent gotten around to putting one on yet lol
  • replace the tail pipe.. have it EXIT under the rear bumper...

have a muffler shop custom make one.. not that pricy.. ASK.

I had a custom done to my 2004 Ram 1500.. was like 80 dollars. installed.
as my Ram I lowered.. and had a problem with tail pipe and leaf spring rubbing.

To address your Question... NO. counter to sales...
people that Want performance also Wants Sound....
  • The 70 series is supposedly made for towing. I would also look into a Walker Dynomax muffler. and yes get a tailpipe that exits out the side behind the tire. when they exit out under the bumper the sound will bounce of the front of the trailer.
  • The problem isn't the Flowmaster muffler.

The problem is where you have it exiting, out the side before the rear wheel.

It will be much quieter and have very little change in exhaust flow, if you change it to exit out the rear by the bumper, instead of where it is now.

Leave the Flowmaster, but cut the pipe before the bend that routes it out the side and have a new pipe made to go back over the axle and exit out the rear corner of the truck.
  • I would try a Flowmaster Super 50.

Don't dump it under the bed, send it out the side before or after the axle.
  • What ever you decide, a tailpipe will be much quieter inside the cab.
