Everybody gets to decide what they're comfortable with, and part of that is how far and what type of terrain they tow in. I would personally cap a half ton truck at around a 7000 lb trailer (wet). But I drive in a lot of Rockies and I have a wife, three kids and a dog so I load the truck up pretty good just with live cargo let alone our stuff.

I don't personally think OP has enough truck for the trailer he's eyeing, but I also think his truck can physically do it if he's comfortable with it. Especially in Texas where you can stand on a tuna can and see 30 miles.

8k dry will be 9k loaded for a long weekend with empty tanks. 1150-1250 pounds of TW leaves little left for family and a bed full of camping gear if you have 1600 pounds of payload.

Walaby pretty much summed it up.

We run our F-150 E-boost with a 1400 lbs max cargo is at or near its limit and the combo works fine.

Our 25 ft Dutchman has a dry weight of 5000 lbs but it weighs 6200 lb or more when loaded.

The scales are you friend, they give you the axle loads towing and non-towing, so you can see how close or over the ratings you are.

You will find it is easy to gain lose a couple of hundred pounds over time with changes in the amount of gas, water and supplies on board.

IMHO the bottom line is payload and how much YOU want to exceed manufacturer specs.

If you want "validation" that you can "tow it" with your current 1/2 ton, you will find folks who can help you rationalize that.

If you want ammunition to upgrade your truck, that info will be provided by others.

In the end, you are the one that has to decide what your comfort level is, and whether or not you feel safe enough to put you and your family in a zone that exceeds manufacturer specifications.

There are folks here that feel comfortable doing that, and for them, depending on their experience, where they go (mountains vs flat lands), it may work out fine for them. There are others (Im in this boat), who strive to stay within ALL vehicle ratings. With my trailer (6800 lbs loaded), I was within payload for my Sierra 1500 with me, my wife, and my 30lb dog. But, when I added grandkids, bikes and cooler in the back, I was over payload by roughly 100 lbs. I decided here recently to upgrade to 3/4 ton. Did I feel safe, even exceeding payload a little (but being wihin axle ratings).. yes, I was okay. But, I knew I was going to travel more, in mountains etc.. and did not want to worry about potential problems.

In the end, you are the only one who can answer this question. There is a certain amount of responsibility and liability that comes with your decision. In the end, if something bad happens, I don't think saying "The folks on RV.NET" said it would be okay, will make anyone feel better.

Here's a really good calculator on line that you can fill in the values with what you know, adjust for any safety factor you would like, and it will tell you the max trailer weight, and max tongue weight you should fit within.

I would not buy that truck for that trailer and would suggest a bigger truck. But that's spending your money.

I didn't trade my eco when I moved up and my trailer is about the same size/weight you're looking at. Others can argue the legalities. I have over 5,000 miles logged that says it can be done safely. I figure it'll get me by until I can upgrade to a one ton. Power and engine braking have not been an issue for me in Colorado or anywhere else. A trailer that size can wag your truck. Watch for strong cross winds. If you don't feel in complete control, slow down. My $.02.

I did not have good luck with my Flagstaff 8528RESS 5th wheel which was listed at 8800 lbs.

I could pull it just fine with my F150 SuperCab but coming down the mtns like found on I81 in Virginia was the killer for me... The F150 was not enough truck to be safe coming down the other side of the mountains...

Of course the salesman said I could pull this trailer with my F150 with no problems whatsoever...

You could also very easily get swamped out on two lanes roads like US82 outside of Crossett Arkansas meeting up with a loaded down Georgia Pacific log truck going 70MPH. The last thing you might remember is the truck driver with a big smile on his face haha...

Payload is usually exceeded before tow capacity which is a marketing gimmick.

Your payload is 1600 - can you see the problem here?

I'm using a similar tow vehicle and towing about (5300 dry) 7k pounds loaded for a trip. My payload is 1800, the OP's is probably very close to that.

At 420 pounds of torque, power is a non issue at my weight, and I have no reason to believe any different at your proposed weight. You'll have to do the math against your payload, as others have said, that's where you'll pass your capability first. We are usually a hundred pounds over ours (been to a scale), and I'm okay with that.
