The wood in the Evergreen Everlite was required by the TPO roof manufacturer for proper adhesion of the roof. See these comments from Evergreen on the question. The change had nothing to do with pricing or cost.

"Since we vacuum laminate the roof skin to the roof sheeting with urethane adhesive, which becomes waterproof when it cures, the wood is completed sealed off. There is really no way for moisture to get to that roof sheeting. We have had no issues at all. This is also creates a very strong roof you and a couple people can walk on it. That is not the case with many other brands"
