Sounds like they inadvertently performed a classic PIT maneuver as used by law enforcement.
Really sorry about the rig. Keep us posted on how the insurance works out, but be prepared for the lawsuit if you are not fully compensated. The insurance companies want to avoid a 'lawyer up' situation, as I am sure you do as well. But start preparing now in case you need it - documentation, police reports, etc.
