Jasper Transmission

My truck is starting to whine in my low gears. It shifts fine, but it make a terrible whining sound when I'm climbing hills or in first and second gear. Seems like Jaspers have a liking here, just wanted to get some feedback on Jaspers v. a GM dealer for example. Looks like Jaspers would be just under $4000 installed and I haven't called dealers yet.

Thanks!

Thanks for the tip! I'm going to give him a call as I'm only ten minutes from his shop.

    Post what you find out.
Mike L. (unsure if he's an employee or the owner) posts on one of the Duramax forums quite frequently.

I bought one of his larger capacity drop in trans coolers for my 09 truck.

If Jasper builds tranny's like they build motors, I would not waste my time with them!! Their warranty sucks at best.

Warranty coverage is what the friend of mine had problems with. The warranty was pretty much useless.

I second that motion. Jasper is a chop shop that sells product with marketing and a killer warranty that you are VERY likely to use.

I'd go to a local shop.

Jaspers' quote of $4000 seems excessively high. I haven't heard good things about Jaspers.... warranty issues that a friend had were a complete nightmare.

I'm mentioning them because your profile says "So. Cal" as your location.

Thanks for the tip! I'm going to give him a call as I'm only ten minutes from his shop. I saw a bunch of reviews of building transmission for diesels, I'm wondering if he even messes with 4l80e that I have in my gas powered Chevy.

I got my tranny (4L60E) rebuilt a couple of years ago to my specs and the parts I wanted. Original cost would have been about $1700 and ended up costing me $2200. This included cracking open the transfer case to make sure everything was alright and replacing the seals.

I'd suggest calling a few, if not more, shops and ask them what they know about your transmission, what they would recommend as far as beefing it up and what it would cost. If the first thing they say is, "Well, we need to open it up first before we can make any recommendations" hang up and call the next shop on the list.

And whatever you do, DO NOT go to the dealership! The service dept specializes in warranty work, recalls and maintenance. They are not tranny specialists. I wouldn't be surprised in the least that most dealerships send out transmissions, along with other items, to be rebuilt.

As far as a Jasper goes, I know their engines are very good but I don't know about their trannys.
  • if it is a truck you plan on keeping maybe check into a good reliable local tranny shop that could do a heavy duty rebuild for you which probably wouldn't cost too much more than just a standard rebuild.
