I'm far from the weight police but will caution you to be prepared for bigger truck with those trailers. Generally speaking if you are putting that much thought into the weight limits then you are going to be over. I'd guess you didn't have propane, BBQ, food, drink, glasses, lawn chairs, games, books, and all the 'just in case' items in the trunk of the Taurus?.
FWIW - Our trailer was advertised at 5600# dry.. Scaled with me/wife/dog/cat and full of water, ready to camp we were MAXED out on our older GMC sierra at 7500# towing capacity and the max Combination rating. I'm a truck driver so understand the weight issues and take it real easy when I have to. We live on the prairies and never travel much more than 3 hours away. I'm not going to say it depends on your abilities because I'll get slammed for it but just be prepared for what might come after the big trailer. (aka, papa gets a bigger truck).
My $0.02
