Jayco Winterization Question About Pumping Anti-Freeze

This is my first travel trailer and my first winter where I am doing my own winterization. I read up a lot on the forums and watched countless YouTube videos on the topic. I have already drained my tanks, drained my lines and blew them out via city water inlet with 30 psi. My next step is to add some RV anti-freeze. However, I have one question specifically about my Jayco Jay Flight. I am about to pump RV anti-freeze into my water system. My RV pump is already equipped with a hose for pumping out of the bottle. I noted it has a value I turn on to start the flow. It also has another value near it for the water intake hose from the fresh water tank, which is normally open.

Do I turn the valve for water hose coming from the fresh water tank closed, then pump anti-freeze into my water system? By closing this valve it likely prevents anti-freeze from backing into my fresh water tank, but I don't know for certain. However, how does that hose not freeze without anti-freeze or do I keep the value open when pumping in anti-freeze.

I hope that was clear. Anyways, thanks for the assistance.

  • QUICK...before you take off the screen on the city water connection, bleed the pressure off the system by opening a faucet. DO NOT push the button under the screen without doing this first as it will dislodge an o ring and the easiest fix is to replace the whole thing.
  • my winterizing kit came with a valve that was dual position. one position and the AF is pulled in, other position, water from tank pulls out.
    bumpy
  • If you drained the tank using the low point drain valves there will be nothing in that line from the tank to freeze. Also, if you didn't close the valve from the tank to the pump you wouldn't get suction on the line to the antifreeze. Don't ask me how I know!
  • If you've drained with the low point drains, anything in the fresh water line or tank should be gone.
  • Thanks to both of you!

Yep, I bypassed the water heater and drained it prior to this step. I also drained the fresh water tank very good, as well as, emptied my black/gray tanks.

I will close the valve to the fresh water tank before pumping in the RV anti-freeze then. However, is there water in that line from the fresh water tank to the valve I should worry could freeze? Or did it empty when I emptied my fresh water tank?

I didn't know about the city water inlet "button". Thanks for the tip on that!!

    Thanks again guys!
  • If the fresh water system is drained/dry, no need to put anything into it.

Keep that valve closed so no pink stuff goes into your fresh tank.

Before you proceed, have you by-passed your water heater and drained it????? Be sure to do this also. Please before draining the hot water heater turn off the pump, open a faucet, and let gasses out of the system. I darn near killed myself taking out the anode rod draining my water heater one year. Had NOT opened faucet to relieve gas pressure and that rod shot out like a missile when it got loose enough, went right over my shoulder next to my ear and ended up across the street from me. A close call to a potential serious injury.

Anyway, once your fresh water shut off from anti-freeze and your hot water heater drained and by-passed, use that valve on the pump to suction the anti-freeze right out of the bottles.

You should probably get two of those gallon jugs at minimum.

Start at outlets closest to pump and work away from there. Don't forget outside shower (if you have one) and be sure to let some anti-freeze drain into the drains and traps to keep them good for winter.

Be sure to do the toilet too. Anything extra down the toilet or drains goes into the holding tanks of course, and that does not hurt one bit.

Be sure to check your city water connection. There is a rubber washer with a screen on it there. Underneath you will find a white plastic plunger type valve, be sure to push on that and let any water there drip out too.
  • Close valve on fresh water tank suction line....don't want anti-freeze going into tank
Open valve on suction hose you stick in bottle of anti-freeze...turn on pump and put anti-freeze thru lines (hot/cold---showers/faucets, toilet, low point drains etc.)

Water heater cold inlet should be closed and bypass valve open (hot outlet valve closed if you have one) so anti-freeze doesn't go into water heater tank
