Jeep Grand Cherokee Eco Diesel

you need to find the payload capacity of the Jeep.
SUVs have poor payload capacities, compared to their towing capacities.

you'll always run out of payload, WAY before you get close to the towing max.

Jeeps do very well matched to a smaller cargo trailer (or a boat).

I have a 2015 JGC Summit 4x4 with the Eco diesel. It is fully loaded and the payload is 1050 pounds. Not much lower than a fully loaded Ram 1500.

I don't have that Jeep, but I do have a similar capacity BMW 3 liter diesel, and I had a 2.8 liter Jeep Libby diesel until it dropped a valve at 200,000 miles. All those European 3 liter diesels are very strong engines, and very closely matched as to horsepower and torque. When we were looking to retire the Libby as tow vehicle, the JGC diesel was on the short list, but we opted for the Bimmer in the end.

I agree that you will likely run out of tongue weight/payload capacity before you run out of pull. But stay below those limits, and you will like the pull you get, as well as the mileage.

I have the Ram EcoD and you will not be disappointed. Upgraded to that from my Jeep Liberty Diesel. Towing a small cargo trailer will be a breeze.

Don't know if you've been to this forum, but here is an interesting thread. Looks like it does well with 4500lb travel trailers as well.

Towing "experience"

Well we went and test drove the Grand Cherokee Limited 4x4 today.

I must say the diesel's get up and go was more than what I expected.
I had to pull out into traffic on a heavily traveled road the dealership is on and I had nail it to get out of the parking lot.
Very impressed.

Noise level was ok. Wife says it sounds like a bus.
Seats comfortable and power adjustments let us dial them in to our liking.


Now for the bad. I knew one of my BIL's had gotten one. DW texted him and he in fact has the eco diesel. It keeps throwing a code that the dealer can not clear and he is ready to file a lemon law claim on it.

I will have to talk to him to find out what exactly the problem is.
He owns his own mechanic shop so I would trust his word.

I scanned through a dozen or so.
One caught my eye about setting his WDH with a lot of spring to keep the front down.
The one tow package option says it has air leveling suspension in the tow package.

Check the specs on the deisel vs the Hemi. The 5.7 has high torque and horse power, also a higher tow rating.
