Jounces and Wandering? Ride Quality, 19.5s on DRW Feedback?

RV dot Netters,

In final stages of my current TC build out and have gone with a DRW Ram CTD and an Eagle Cap Triple Slide (EC 1165)...What a cool camper.

Setup: I am thinking about installing a set of 19.5s on this dually to gain some additional tire load safety margin, especially when towing.

The Key Issue: my ride quality right now is quite good. With the EC TC the rear axel is loaded heavily (still under ratings), but the front axel is slightly unloaded.

Question: Who has experience with a similar setup? Will my ride quality and tracking deteriorate?

BTW: I have added Big Wig Sway Bar and AirLift 5000 Airbags on this truck already to improve stock ride quality and ride height. Have Bilstein 4600s to put on, too.

Thanks,
JP
  • When I was replacing my tires on my stock 19.5s, I went with Fs instead of the stock Gs for my own tradeoff. I really wanted the aggressive DH-01s and the Fs still have enough capacity. Gs weren't available in the 225s.

I still think considering higher range Es is worth considering, but I don't have a problem with having too strong of tires/wheels either!

Sometimes a value judgement of need is as subjective as the opinion on what is to rough a ride.

There is value in having tires that will last at least 80-90K miles while loaded with a heavy camper. (My load range E tires were just about done around 35K camper miles.) I also like the extra margins..

    different strokes...

  • I've got 'em on mine to carry my Host double slide camper. I take the camper off and use the truck all the time. I found that adjusting the Ranchos improved the ride although it is stiffer than the ride with the original E rated tires and stock shocks.

Ride quality is subjective to describe. I'm fine with the ride and am working on my third set of H rated 19.5 tires. I now have about 220K miles on the truck, much of it with the camper. I put the Rickson/19.5's on at about 35K miles when E rated tires were wearing very rapidly.
I currently have Michelin XDS2 H- load rated. Here is what truck looked like when I first put them on.

I think the investment is well worth it contrary to most on this forum. The tires have little side wall flex as compared with your E tires... and last a long time carrying the load.
  • Wondering if anyone has direct experience converting a 1 Ton Dually to 19.5s?
  • DRW Tire Capacity Rear Axel on my truck is 11,340
Without trailer and lightly loaded I have 1,440 available

With more load in the TC, and 1000# tongue weight I am now very close to rated capacity.
  • We have used 19.5" wheels and tires on our SRW set up for 10 years and have been very pleased with all aspects, We run 85 psi front and 105 psi rear. We have Rancho 2000 adjustable shock absorbers which are a big help with ride control. Our rig weighs a little under 14,000 lbs when fully loaded for a long jaunt ie. Alaska.

I replaced them after seven years, the tread was still good but dry rot was evident.
  • I've weighed the truck. I am fine for tire load margin until I tow. Then it gets close (within 2-300#) of the aggregate rated load.
  • My F450 came with 19.5s stock. I find it rides fine (wanders some) but I'm used to 19.5s. I moved from 18s to 19.5s on my SRW.

I expect you will notice a ride quality difference and tendency for the front to track/wander. You biggest advantage is in stiffer/stronger tires.

I don't think you are anywhere near the capacity of 4 DRW tires in the rear. Have you thought about just going to the same size tire but higher load rating or considered running higher pressure in rear?
