I also live in Idaho, although in Payette County, rather than Ada. I had absolutely no problem getting a change through the courthouse. We have lived in Clearwater and Custer Counties and had no problem there, either. They realize that life happens.

Maybe where you live, but not BS at all in most counties across the country. So giving this kind of advice can get someone in a lot of trouble that could easily be avoided. I know for fact they do it where I live. The judges must be VERY forgiving in your county (BTW, this is up to the judges to issue the warrant. Better hope you don't get a zealous judge any time soon!). Most courts issue bench warrants for no shows. It even tells you that on the summons. I personally don't know anyone who's had to go through it mostly because no one I know is foolish enough to test out that theory.

In San Diego we can just call the phone number on the summons and ask for an extension. They also allow you to show up anywhere from 2 weeks before to two weeks after the summons date.

It can't hurt to call and ask for an extension the worst that can happen is they say no.

This is interesting. 30 days, and this is not federal court. I know federal court is a 30 day commitment. I was called but either because I had been on a jury earlier that year or the fact that I work for a federally controlled company they excused me. As for regular duty duty, we are given one day, call the night before and you are needed or not. If needed you go for one day unless picked for a trail.

Good luck but I would still camp on the weekends.

Great idea! Except for the fact that they issue a bench warrant for no-show. Depending on how you explain your absence, you might simply get to reschedule. You might get a 30 day jail sentence. Just call ahead and get it rescheduled.

The way I look at it, it's a small price to pay for having a court system with jury that is comprised of my neighbors. The alternative is pretty scary.

The jury selection system in my County is pretty strict about attendance. We have the call in system but if you're scheduled to be there, you better show up, take a seat, and quit your grumbling. I saw more than a handful of folks that were offered a few days free stay in the cross bar hotel if they didn't want to play nice.
The way it's handled here is that you have a scheduled period of duration to be in the active jury pool, I think it was three weeks. If you sit on a jury for a trial, you're relieved of any more duty. A trial lasts typically, a day, or two at most. Only the very complicated high-profile trials last any more than that.

If the OP's wife sits on a trial at the beginning of her scheduled dates, she may be free from then on. I would suggest to do your duty and don't grumble about any personal inconvenience.

She should call and tell them you have plans to be out of state at that time and offer to get back on the list at a later date. Usually on the forms they have a number to call in the event of a problem. It is worth a shot anyway. I have had to do that once and they were very nice about it.

If they have the call-in system, all is not lost. Depends on how many cases they have and how many jurors they need. In NY they tell you to call in the night before to see if you have to show up in the morning. Sometimes you call on Wed and they tell to call back next week.

There are no trials on the weekends....set up someplace close to home, and if DW calls Thurs nite and doesn't have to show up on Friday, she is good to go until Monday!
