On comparing the two suspensions (2nd gen leaf set up to current), I don't have but 20 min drive time in a new one, but I have years of 2nd gen experience. I can vouch for the fact that the 2nd gens would take a lot of weight to induce any sag.
Here's my 2002 (8' bed) with a load of wet wood in it (fresh cut downed tree), has to be what...1500#?? -- and that just made it ride nice. No sag. Trouble is, when empty, you could tell if you ran over a dime. I think they are keeping up with customer expectations, and that kind of ride just won't do these days. People would buy the competition's truck because it "rode smoother". People - myself included in that group, want capability and luxury. Why do you think they are able to sell these $60k - $70k leather lined workhorses? Heck, my new one will have heated front and rear seats and a heated steering wheel. Find those options on a 2002 of any brand. People want more luxury, but still want to be able to haul and tow. I think my new RAM will do both - otherwise I wouldn't have bought it. But time will tell.
