As far as the engine/transmission and shifting, what you experienced is normal. If you slow down you'll get better gas mileage.
As far as changing your TV to one with a larger engine and/or switching to diesel is concerned, a major consideration is how much of your drive time in that vehicle will be towing your trailer versus other types of driving. If it's 10% of your driving time does the benefit of moving the change worth the added expense? As that percentage increases the incentive to make the change increases. Ultimately only you can decide if the comfort and convenience is worth it to you and always assuming that whatever vehicle is being used is being operated safely within the published specification limits.
