I really think this (like so many things in life), boils down to personal responsibility. I'll quantify my comments by admitting I've never towed with a diesel, but this is what I perceive after towing with four different gassers over the last 21 years. A gas truck for me is a very comfortable tow IF, and I mean IF you are a good margin under their max tow and payload ratings. It's the the ones that are towing over say, 75% of the rating that will struggle. My new truck is rated to tow over 11,000 lbs, and has a payload of 2876. My TT has a GVWR of 7600, and my tongue weight is 1000. I expect a very comfortable tow. I agree completely with those who aren't afraid to let the rpm's climb with the load when needed. The new motors are so refined it doesn't bother me a bit.
Your second sentence says a lot. You have a brand new gasser and you are happy and comfy and I have an 8 year old diesel that is pulling over 2 times your trailers gross plus another ton and I'm just as happy and comfy. That's the difference between gas and diesel. How often does your truck gear down running down the interstates? It takes a 5-6% grade for my truck to even gear down. I know you say so let it gear down but I look at it as the motor is looking for help.
