OP, what is your LOADED trailer weight and tongue weight on your truck? Without knowing all the details and weights, its tough to know if your F150 is enough truck. 5400 lbs dry is likely at least 6000 lbs loaded, not including anything in your garage.
I think that if you invested some time and maybe a little money in your F150 it might work fine for you. E rated tires would make it feel more planted. Adjusting the brakes on the trailer might help with a surging feeling. Dialing in your WDH will certainly help.
That being said, you would have much more wiggle room with a 3/4 or 1 ton truck. Toy haulers can be a little finicky because depending upon weight in the garage and how its loaded can have a much bigger impact on your WDH and tongue weight. A 3/4 ton or heavier truck would be less influenced by the weight behind you. Also, I'm sure those kids are going to keep growing and adding weight.
You'll be hard pressed to find a clean Excursion... they are getting quite rare. I believe GM still makes a 3/4 ton Suburban, so they might be easier to find and newer.
If you all fit into a pickup now, you might consider a crew cab 3/4 or 1 ton pickup as well.
