More evidence of this are the old GMC heavy duty V6 gas truck engines. IIRC the largest was 478 CID! Looking up the specs it made max torque (440 ft/lbs) at 1400 rpm. Not much by today's standards, but this was a normally aspirated GAS engine and yet it made as much or more torque than the normally aspirated 444 CID diesel that International and Ford used in the late '80s. I'll wager that the mpg was horrendous!
