More evidence of this are the old GMC heavy duty V6 gas truck engines. IIRC the largest was 478 CID! Looking up the specs it made max torque (440 ft/lbs) at 1400 rpm. Not much by today's standards, but this was a normally aspirated GAS engine and yet it made as much or more torque than the normally aspirated 444 CID diesel that International and Ford used in the late '80s. I'll wager that the mpg was horrendous!
Your bet would have been correct. Neighbor had a mid 60's 2.5 ton truck that had that engine in it. 3 MPG was the average. At least that is what he told me. But then again, fuel was around 26 cents a gallon or so. :E
