I doesn't matter if it's I, V pancake or other as long as the bore stroke ratio is the same it makes no difference which way the pistons go.
One has to look no further than the 6.7 Powerstroke and the 6.7 Cummins to see you can build the same or more torque with a V than an I.
With diesels it's just a matter of cranking up the boost and adding fuel until it can't handle any more. No worries about detonation and octane ratings that go with gas engines.
