Speaking of inline sixes, I had a motorcycle that had a 1000cc inline 6. The Honda CBX engine was a very short stroke design, so it's low end torque was rather weak. But it had cams with plenty of lift, duration and overlap, so at high RPM, it really breathed. 9500 rpm redline ( which was pretty high for it's day and age ).
As others have noted, inline sixes are inherently smooth. A publicity stunt with this bike was to balance a couple of cigarettes on end, one on the engine case and one on the the gas tank, hit the starter and let the engine run from idle to redline....the cigarettes would stand there motionless.
It was a neat motor. Awesome sound . But low end torque was not it's strong point. Probably should have kept that bike, but I let 'er go.
