As others pointed out the torque is due to the longer stroke of many in lines rather than the angles between the pistons.
Audi/VW used to run their 4-cylinder length wise in the engine bay even when they had a transaxle FWD. They eventually went transverse and even upped it to 5 cylinders but I think the nose would to long to do this with an in line five or six (as pointed out, it is too long to mount transversely) in FWD.
Opposing cylinders are pretty smooth if you could fit a flat 8...
