Audi/VW used to run their 4-cylinder length wise in the engine bay even when they had a transaxle FWD. They eventually went transverse and even upped it to 5 cylinders but I think the nose would to long to do this with an in line five or six (as pointed out, it is too long to mount transversely) in FWD.
Opposing cylinders are pretty smooth if you could fit a flat 8...
Audi still does run all their engines length wise including the 4 cylinders, except for the A3 and Q3 which are based on Golf platforms.
