Any idea how the top seal chalk was compromised? Did something fall on it?
Nothing fell on it. The sealant/caulk is degraded almost the entire length of the topseal - some areas are worse than others. The topseal is kinda odd. There's a rail attached to the side of the camper above the slideout opening and there's a rubber piece that slides into the rail. The rubber piece is screwed to the camper only at the each edge so there's alot of movement. There's was a bead of caulk along the rubber piece and the side of the camper, but because of the movement, the caulk gave way resulting in areas where water can penetrate. Last night I had my wife extend and retract the slide as watch the interaction between the rubber piece and the slideout seal. That rubber piece moves alot when the slide is retracted and again when it opens. This poor design along with the gutter low point being directly over the slideout is cause of the issue. I don't want to adjust the gutter as I'm nervous about compromising the roof, but I'm considering screwing down the rubber seal along it's entire length to minimize the movement and then resealing it. See the pic below. Thoughts?
