We're talking about a gas engine here. The only time a less restrictive air filter could help is when it is at wide open throttle (WOT). At any other time pressure drop across the throttle plate is the only thing limiting air flow. The same goes for "cold air" intakes. "Hot air" is providing all the oxygen the engine needs if you're not at WOT.
Unless you spend a lot of time at WOT and have a desire to increase WOT performance, aftermarket intakes and filters can do nothing for you.
