Who has replaced their stock air filter with a K&N? Are they really better? Improve performance, gas mileage, etc.

Brother did back in the late 1970s. PITN and no real improvement.
May as well remove the air filter and see what you gain. KN will give just a fraction and still pass plenty of extra grit.
