Who has replaced their stock air filter with a K&N? Are they really better? Improve performance, gas mileage, etc.

i to have experience with the k&n filter i had one on my 02 duramax it lasted a whole 500 miles before i took it out and replaced with factory one the reason i got red of it was the check engine soon light came on the minute i stared the truck after installing it i called k&n help line and they told me that was normal and that it would go away after X-number for engine starts but it never did and when i took it out the map sensor was covered in oil and fine dust so never again with k&n
