LANCE 815 on SB Dodge???

I'm looking to move from my pop-up TC to a Lance 815. Seems like a real nice lighter weight camper and lots of used units are available. It must be a very popular camper.

Anyone using one on a 4WD Dodge diesel 2500 crew cab?

Seems like a lot of overhang off the rear from pictures I've found.

I'm currently carrying a Palomino Bronco 1200. Airbags, 9000 shocks and higher load rated tires is all I did to the truck. My camper fully loaded is just under 2000 pounds. Truck handles this set up nicely.

Also...What are these "pods" I see reference to for the short bed conversion?

Anything I should look out for in my search for a used 815?

Thanks

  • As I recall the 815 shower drains directly into the black tank so you will fill up real quick. That was the only down fall we had with ours unitll the family grew then it was on to bigger camper.
Yes you can bypass that shower drain and there are many threads on that in here to read on.

Lance no longer makes the 815, a mistake in my opinion. The pods are extra storage when you have that unit on a short bed truck, your Dodge will have no problem hauling a 815 around.
  • The pods mount to the rear of the camper under the edge. Main function is to provide tail lights at the rear edge of the camper. But they also inlucde a little bit of storage. Easy to bolt install/remove them.

The TC whill have a small 4-prong trailer connector on each side so wiring is already there. The mounting holes are also provided along with the proper bracket for installing the tie-down point 18" forward.

A N-S bed 815 would be ideal for a short bed truck with the center of gravity just behind the axle. With my E-W bed, the COG is about 6" in front of the axle on my long bed truck. Wet and loaded (though I'm a light packer) I'm under 2,400#.

The overhand would only be 18" behind the rear bumper. Mine is flush.
  • I have a 2004 Lance 815 on a 2006 Dodge 2500 diesel 4x4 long bed quad cab. It has the east/west cab over bed. It did not come with the storage pods. Bought TC at a dealer and it was a one owner camper. Honestly forgot to ask about them since I have a long bed. You will be fine with this model. Our trucks can handle a heavier TC than this. I got caught up with the weight police here in this forum. Nice camper but regret selling my 3000lb. dry weight camper with bigger tanks.
  • The Lance 815 won't overhang much/any more than a B1200 Palomino.

Both are considered 8' campers (as in floor length).

Should be well within the rear axle capacity of a stock 2500 Dodge. IIRC they were like 1725lbs dry.
  • The lance 865 replaced the 815 but is made for shorted rucks only. It does not have the removable shorted pods. I considered the Lance 815 and looked at several used units, but went with a Northwood Mfg Wolf Creek 850. The 815 will overhang the back of a shortbed truck about 1.5', pretty normal for that size camper. As for weight, depending on the options it was made with, it can weigh as much as 2400 lbs DRY! It is a great camper. The 815 was made with the North-South bed or East-West bed. The Lance website has owners manuals in their support section that might also give you some info. Hope that helps a little.

  • I have a Lance 825 on an 02 Dodge diesel shortbed. Handles fine. I added 9000s and bumpstop extenders.

The pods are extra storage boxes for shortbed trucks that are removable if you use the camper on a long bed.

I looked at an 815 as well but went with the 825 due to bigger holding tanks.

    Good luck!
