Your method works. It just assumes the liability by modifying the manufacturer's design is all. When I routed my cables, and used my 'sniffer' for gases, I still was able to detect gasses leaking around the top and bottom halves of the box. I sealed with caulking, which will make the problem of future access even more of a problem for me.
