When someone has a 3 year old trailer and says "it was a poor job of sealing the roof vent area" it leads me to believe that they've never been on the roof to inspect the sealant, which is a huge no-no. It almost sounds as if the OP expected the roof seals to last forever and ever.
You were very fortunate that your Jayco didn't leak, but then again I suspect that YOU kept an eye on things as you strike me as this sort of person - maintenance oriented, etc.
