Leaky Seal on Blackwater Valve???

I am pretty new to travel trailers. I recently found that when I go to empty my holding tanks that when I remove the bayonet fitting cap from my drainage pipe that I have a good amount of black water pours out, despite the fact that the valve is not yet opened. It's a little gross....

Is this normal or do I have a faulty valve seal? Should any fluid leak out when the valve is closed?

I have a full warranty on my trailer so if this is not normal I will certainly look to get it fixed.

thanks
matt

  • One of these works better.

Just twist it on to the fitting on the end and then put the cap on/off. Hook up the hose and just pull two valves instead of one. No surprises.
  • HERE is a idea that helps keep from getting those surprised showers when removing the dump cap. But yes the dealer should fix the problem.
  • Hi Matt, my system also dumps some black tank liquid when I remove the cap. In my case I think it is more a case of some liquid staying in the line at a low point and moving to the outfall end when the rv is moving. I plan on installing another valve at the end of the discharge pipe to take care of this problem. I guess a way to check is to dump the black tank, drive the rig around a bit, reopen the end cap to be sure the line is empty then add water to the tank and see if you have a leak. The dealer should fix if there is a leak in the black valve.
  • It isn't normal and shouldn't be happening with a new valve. You might try opening and closing a few times, may be a piece of debris stuck in the slide.
