This is pretty much how we have to do it in my home town in Missouri.
I will make this observation though. I am wintering in Tucson, Arizona again. I find that almost all drivers here are quite courteous. Traffic can be heavy much of the time, and if you need to move over, they make room for you. This is true on both surface streets and the highways.
