It's not that people want to cover the plate (the rear one anyways), but rather the plate on most trucks are mounted in the indent in the center of the bumper. When you slide the TC in, it covers it.
This would then necessitate removing it from the truck and mounting it on the TC. If you forget to do it, you have to jack up the TC again to get to it. Then when you get home and take the TC off, you have to remember to take the plate off of the TC and reinstall it on the truck.
Though I never did, some people take their TC on and off of the truck as they get to their camping spots so they don't have to drive with it on. Remembering to move the plate all of the time would be a PITA.
For the 4 - 5 years I had a TC, I never moved my plate to the camper and was never bothered about it.
