Liftgate or Liftglass Ajar Warning on Navigator

I got this last year and been working on the many gremlins it has lol Latest one is if I shut the drivers door the rear power hatch would open. Trying different things I found out that the power hatch mechanism didn't shut it tight enough and if I manually shut it the hatch would not open when I shut the drivers (or any other) door. So been driving it about a week and a half and this morning noticed the interior lights stayed on and when I started truck got the Lift gate or Lift glass Ajar warning on the information center. The interior lights will stay on until after I start driving but when I park and shut off engine the lights stay on. I looked and see there is a latch/lock at bottom of lift gate and on the sides there are 2 plastic pieces that seem to move when the lift gate closes. Where should I start to look?

  • There is also a pinch strip on either side to detect fingers etc. Could be one of these is faulty. Hard to diagnose the system without the proper equipment.
  • Update: I sprayed dry lubricant on everything and nothing changed. Then I sprayed electrical connector cleaner on the 2 side plastic pieces with springs thinking they had a sensor in them. One had some gunk in it that I used a old toothbrush to clean out. Then I sprayed WD40 on everything from hinges, latch, 2 plastic pieces, where they rest, even the support hinges. Now it powers down but when it closes it reopens but when I manually shut it light stays off no information warning.
I'll check the above. COntent for now I can drive it until I figure it all out. I wonder if the hatch supports/shocks are weak and allow the door to close to fast/hard and that is why it reopens?
  • These can be tough to track down because so much runs through the gem and other controls. I have a 2002 Explorer that gave me fits. Door ajar messages, radio not turning off, dome light issues. It turned out to be a broken wire in the driver door loom between door jam and door.
  • There should be a liftgate ajar switch on the latch that is in the middle of the lower edge of the liftgate. It could be caused by a faulty switch, or the liftgate not being closed tightly. If you open the liftgate, and use a small screwdriver to flip the latch into the closed position (should be two clicks, I believe)it should turn the interior lights off. If this is the case, it sounds like the liftgate is not closing tightly. If the latch is in the closed position and the lights stay on, I would suspect a faulty switch.
