Does it matter if the truck and trailer is hooked up? I just have my truck close enough to plug it in.
If one side works, the system has a ground but the lights are dim then the ground is poor. Look for broken lead or bad connection in the circuit that is not working.
Check connections under the tongue of trailer in the junction box were the trailer plug connects. If the wires are exposed along the frame then checks for worn spots or breaks.
