Lightweight Trailer

We are looking for a lightweight trailer with a small slide 26-28 ft. What is a good brand to look at? Do you recommend the fiberglass or aluminum siding?
Thanks
  • Asking about "good brands" on an RV forum is kind of like asking a group of people which of them like their children the best. :) You're probably better served by asking the group which manufacturers should be avoided. But even then there's going to be SOMEONE with a positive story to share. Most of us are fans of the brands we own or we probably wouldn't own them. :) I'm sure there are SOME exceptions to that, but by and large most of us are pretty happy with our purchases.
  • Hi-lo towlite, look for 2001 thru 2010 because the alumium framing is better. Hydralic lift system, lowers for towing! 27ft model has tip-out sofa section, dry wieght 5000lbs. Company was started 1957 to 2010, parts are easy to find.Even with the company not producing anymore.Needs to have a TV with a 7500 rating.
I'm towing a 06 22ft Hi-Lo towlite at 3800lbs with a toyota tacoma V6 rated at 6500lbs.Not sure of your TV, I don't tow more than 80% of my TV rating.

    Define "lightweight"
  • Ascend A231RBK. I bought an Ascend A171RD due to towing limitations.

  • I read somewhere that hail impact can cause fiberglass to delaminate. I'm not sure if that's true. A few years ago our aluminum trailer got into a hail storm and it looked like somebody spent hours going over it with a ball peen hammer. The reason I'm telling this is to make the point of getting comprehensive insurance on the TT no matter what the siding. It's not very expensive and things like hail are covered by it even if it's not attached to the TV. Between what the insurance paid and what the dealer gave me on trade for the damaged trailer, I ended up with a couple of thousand more than I paid for the two-year old TT. Definitely go with the siding you like best, but ask your insurance company about comprehensive insurance.
  • We went with fiberglass as we have a lot of hail in our area and it plays thunder with aluminum.
  • FunFinder, we are very happy woith our 2nd one. Get the siding you want, they both have good and bad things about them.
