little help... 08' Powerstroke 6.4L Diesel eval.

Am checking out a low mileage (30k) 2008 6.4L F350 Diesel. 4x4.
Scheduled for a test drive. For sale by owner. Good documented
service history. Used to tow boat, and in bed camper. Dually,
4.3 rear end. Has not been daily driver.

A search on line (forums) indicates recurrent issues with:
radiator, EGR cooler, injectors, turbo issues, fuel consumption.
Owner has not messed with tuners/DPF delete (alledgedly). Only
after-market mods... air-lift, Rancho shocks.

My question... if you were evaluating for purchase what would
focus on ???

  • And that's why you don't ask that question about a Ford here. To many haters. Go to the Ford forums and ask. You will get real answers.

I would focus on another truck... Pass on the 6.4! :W

If it were my money I would follow this advice.
  • Get a bit newer one with the 6.7. The 6.4 was in interim engine to bridge the gap between the 6.0 and the 6.7 to get Ford away from that 6.0 and give it a little breathing room until they could get their 6.7 ready for sale. It is sort of an orphan out there. That 6.7 is a huge improvement over the 6.4.

  • Run to your nearest Chevy or Ram dealer and get a truck you can rely on and won t put you in the poor house.
  • My work truck is a 09 F-450 with 65, 000 miles on it, it's on its 4th radiator but other than that there are no real complaints. The truck is consistantly at 17, 500 lbs and goes up a 7% grade from Golden, Co to the Eisenhower tunnel on Interstate 70 (this strecth down the otherside to Silverthorne is where the truck shootouts are ran through there paces) at the speed limit, so there's plenty of power. Two guys that work with me have an 08 and a 09, one has had to have a radiator replaced the other hasn't had any issues.
I know that people don't buy heavy duty trucks for there fuel efficiency but understand that these trucks are the worse among the bunch, around a 10-11 mpg average.
  • Oasis report from Ford for work done under warranty. Next an inspection done by a reputable diesel shop. It will be well worth it.
  • Thanks Hank,

Done that... wanted to know if folks who tow have any
    special insights.

  • I would go to a ford forum and ask this question not here. Several out there with ford truck enthusiasts being one of the bigger, then there is the powerstroke.com forum and one or 2 more.
