I believe the 4L80E was introduced when the HD trucks debuted circa 2001. The 4L85E was the beefed up version used only behind the 8.1L and Duramax engines in van applications. The Allison went in trucks but not vans due to body height/shape limitations.

Also, in the van application the Duramax is detuned. I'm not sure to what extent, but they do not have the same power output as the pickups.
