Load distribution hitch

I have a 7500lb TT. When i bought it 3 years ago I was towing with a 1500 Chevy PU. So used the wd hitch while towing. I have since upgraded the TV to a 3500 dually..

My question is do I still need to use the WD hitch while towing???

If an engineer knew what they were doing, why do they #1 mount oil filters horizontally so they spill all over everything and #2, mount that horizontal oil filter over the exhaust system? They may be book smart, but they don't have any common sense.

They do that because the bean counters wouldn't let them spend the extra quarter per car to do it properly.

  • I've seen some mighty big travel trailers delivered to dealerships by RV hotshotters without WD. The only reason I bought a Reese WDH for our soon to pick up Jayco 28RLS is we're a little over the 650/1250 lb tongue weight rating of the hitch receiver. I sat another 28RLS on the ball and it only set the rear bumper down 2" while the front didn't change. Advertised tongue weight is 700 lbs with battery and full propane. From past experience, I prefer a short drawbar without WD when I can.
  • GM says you don't require one. They might know as much as some of our contributors. They are also the ones who wrote the warranty and have a legal interest in your tow vehicle. (The GM engineers, not our contributors)
  • If you have it use it. Using the hitch will make your towing experience that much more enjoyable, dually or not.
  • As long as your truck's receiver is rated to handle the tongue weight you shouldn't need the weight distribution part since your TV is plenty stout for that size TT. My truck can handle our TT without our WD/SC hitch but I wouldn't want to tow without it for the sway control properties the hitch provides.

We tow at the speed limit (+/-5mph) and the interstates out west where we do most of our RVing the wind can blow pretty hard, having the sway control I can ride strong and steady even when passing commercial diesel trucks.

I have seen plenty of 3500s towing large TTs and I recall most were using WD/SC hitches. Give it a whirl at highways speeds with & without WD installed and see what you prefer. Enjoy the power and added capacity of your 3500!!!
  • Yes because the receiver is likely not rated high enough for dead carry weight.
