Long and short of it

Can you please give me the pros and cons of short and long bed 1 tons? I am looking at new trucks and shorts seem to be more prevalent. I pull a bumper pull travel trailer and don't know that I would ever change to a 5.
Thanks
  • If you need a long bed, you will know it.

My work truck is a long bed. I need the room. It does work truck things. It carries bulk material; gravel, bark. It carries LOTS of construction supplies and tools. I am able to load it with lots of debris at one time. Short box doesn't cut it for what I need.

If I were just driving or towing or occasionally loading out, I would be into a short bed so fast.
  • i don't get the continual comment on the sheet of plywood?

If and when I need a sheet of plywood i just leave the tail gate up slide the plywood and go.

Why would I have a long bed for the rare occasion that I would need to get s sheet of plywood?

Then we have the comment of the fuel tank. My short bed has like a 36 gal tank or something there abouts. It varies now a days.

    i gotta go. :W

    Pretty much it.
Considering most truck are crew cabs now, wheelbase of a short bed is still long enough to drag any trailer around with the same authority as a long bed.
    Personal preference mostly.

I've always owned short beds up until this '14 Ram. I wasn't necessarily looking for an 8' bed but the deal was just too good to pass up. Yes its a land yacht, parking can be tricky, and it just feels huge.

But...... the ability to put full 4X8 sheets in the bed and close the tailgate is awful nice. All kinds of long stuff is no big deal.

The one gotcha is with a bumper pull that does make you another 18" longer. That might not be a huge deal, but when turning tight corners on narrow streets or crowded fuel stations it can be a bit tough.

If you truly NEVER will get a 5er then a short bed might be your ticket. But, if a 5er is an option, the 8' opens a lot of doors.

  • generally a short bed will have more hop when crossing bumpy roads, the longer wheel base will not be as affected over the bumps. yes a long WB takes more room, bbut with the coil spring suspensions anymore that is not as big a problem as it was. parking is an issue IF you have to park close, a little distance for open parking is better for you and your health but even SB trucks may have issues with the prevalent small parking spaces they set up anymore. try both on test drives and make your own call but be sure to travel the same roads on the test.
