Can I assume that only a long bed will do for a 5th Wheel?
Just read all the compromises people make with a short bed then answer your own question.
But it fits in my garage which is very important to me. - cummins2014Explorer

Depends on what make, some short beds are too short (5.5 feet). The 6.5 foot bed works out great, and no need for a longer bed unless you're carrying your whole world with you.
Some short bed are too short 5.5' ? Too short for who ,the ones that bought them. IMO there are no short bed trucks TOO short, depends on your needs . - cummins2014Explorer

What compromises do I make? Can't haul a 4X8 sheet of plywood with my tailgate closed? .......OH wait , yes I can.:B
As a home owner, and not in any kind of construction, making a case for needing a long bed for hauling an occasional 8' sheet of plywood, lumber ,whatever would be pretty feeble. :) - OH48LtExplorerDepends on what make, some short beds are too short (5.5 feet). I have no idea what compromises you are referring to. I have towed a fifth wheel now for 14 years with two different short bed trucks, and can't think of one compromise that I made. Maybe you could point out to ME what compromises I made, it would be interesting to hear.
If I would have went out ,and bought a long bed truck from listening to the long bed fans, then that would have been a compromise for me, knowing full well I DON'T need nor WANT a long bed. What you long bed fans fail to realize is not EVERYONE has a need or want for a long bed. - 2001400exExplorer

It also depends on the brand and year. Ford short bed is 6 foot 9, Chevy is 6 foot 6, ram is 6 foot 4. And the ram mega cab short bed has the same wheelbase as the long bed crew cab. To each their own, I like a short bed because of better meneauverability, tho I'm thinking of moving to a bigger cab, hope Chevy gets a bigger cab for 2019, if they do, I'm in. If not, I might go to a Ram mega cab. Either way, as others have mentioned, short beds work with the right setup.
Mega Cab is 11" shorter than Long Bed Crew Cab.;)
You made me look it up. You are correct, and the wheelbase is 9 inches shorter. - transamz9Explorer
